Working lunch:
Separate into groups at tables for initial light discussion and idea exchange on the three topics outlined below, chosen by each individual at their own interest. Some materials may be researched and prepared for assisting the conversations at each table. A facilitator for each topic will be designated for each group to keep on focus, and keep civility. Though ideally the progression of the conference to this point should help with that issue.
Sunday afternoon session: “Men’s Congress”
Coming together to reason and ponder the issues defined by the attendees, notably focusing on the three main topics mentioned above and fully introduced below, and hopefully begin to draft a statement, framework, or even simple bullet points to guide and instruct Covenant Christian Men in being and acting like men. We hope to begin a conversation and lay groundwork that may be built on or expanded on in future conferences or events. We are counting on attendees to focus the issues as they see fit, and take the conversation in a self-determined direction toward self-determined goals. No agenda, goal or ultimatum is intended other than the three topics.
This conference is devoted to understanding and more fully embracing our responsibilities as Covenant Christian men. We desire for it to be a positive weekend where we can examine issues like family leadership, righteous manhood, community safety, and safeguarding knowledge.
The Three Topics
Alongside topics relating to family leadership, we also would hope to discuss community safety and our obligation to understand, safeguard and convey gospel knowledge. Men need to be willing to do more of the heavy lifting of The Restoration, not passively participate.
Community safety: How do we deal with threats to the peace and safety of the community? What happens when there are sexual predators among us? Abusers? The mentally ill? These are topics that have been avoided, and may (and have on occasion) become an issue. Are all comers welcome within our society? What if someone needs to be expelled? These are topics that we may consider.
Family leadership: How do we more effectively partner with our spouse, communicate together, and put on a united front against the influences that continue to assault our personal, spousal, and family spirituality and safety. Although we are discussing our roles as men, it must not be forgotten that family leadership is ideally man and woman, equally yoked.
Safeguarding and conveying gospel knowledge: Denver once said that women have the primary role of perpetuating humanity by childrearing. They have largely fulfilled this role. Men have the role of teaching and passing on gospel knowledge. Apostasy after apostasy shows that men have largely abandoned this role. How will we fulfill it? How will we keep the doctrine pure and the knowledge uncorrupted? How will we deal with corrupt ideas being promoted among us? It has happened, will yet happen, and could destroy the cause of Zion. How will godly men of understanding counter this pernicious influence? And to what degree to most men understand these requirements placed on us? We are to be warriors for truth and righteousness—not mere spectators. We are in a battle and it’s time to stand up and be men about it. We may discuss ways we can develop some boldness and courage, tempered by absolute submission to God, guided by his spirit. In other words, meekness. Which is not weakness.
It is time to grapple with some difficult questions. Who gets to decide? What is our “truth” that needs to be protected? Ultimately, the entire body will decide, in all likelihood, but things will never change, no action will be taken, unless we are willing to stand up and take on the difficult topics.
This conference is aimed at an amicable discussion in brotherhood and in charity, of these topics. The desired result is a closer relationship as brothers, a heightened sense of duty and courage, and a proclamation that is designed for the use of all Covenant Christian Men as an approach to protecting and strengthening family, each other, and the Covenant Christian body as a whole. Please join us.
(IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE AND UNDERSTAND THAT THIS EVENT IS IN NO WAY CONNECTED TO OR IN RESPONSE TO ANYTHING OTHER THAN THIS EVENT ITSELF. In all candor, the idea was born out of a realization that came, while watching a Tucker Carlson interview, that men have become passive observers in a lot of ways in our society, and perhaps we should rise up and grasp what is being offered to us by the heavens.
